Buhoma Community Primary School
Buhoma Community Primary School (BCPS) was started in 1996 by Buhoma Mukono Community Development Association (BMCDA) as the profits from the community lodges. It was founded mainly to curb the higher levels of illiteracy and promote conservation in the area. It was quite disturbing to the young children who would walk long distances to access the then available schools. It’s located in Buhoma town council, Kanungu District, southwestern Uganda, 2 kilometers from the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park main gate.

BMCDA was founded in 1993 by community members with the help of American Peace Corps volunteer John Dubois. It’s a non-profit making organization managed by the local community members of Buhoma town council. Its vision was improving the social and economic livelihood of individual households in Buhoma town council. To realize this vision, BMCDA implements a number of development initiatives that promote conservation, eco-tourism, health, and education, income generating activities, water and sanitation, among others.

BCPS is entirely a private school and registered with the Government of Uganda under Ministry of Education and Sports Reg. No. (PPS/B/206). The school, since it was founded, has been getting its funding from the parents’ contributions, sponsors, and at times donations by tourists who turn friends to the school. The school now accommodates 600 pupils and 30 members of staff. It is a mixed day and boarding school with both boys and girls. This being a community school, many people wish to bring their children to this school and hence the need for readiness to accommodate bigger numbers in the future.
